There is something to be said about longer brighter days, seeing the rain through the sunshine, daffodils poking through the soil, rhubarb making a reappearance and spring greens being planted. When you buy into the “buy local” movement, you’re supporting farmers and producers in your community and your local economy.

Thank you to everyone that attended and spoke at our key stakeholder consultation and luncheon last Friday February 10th at Ambrosia Event Centre. It was a very lively discussion and we gathered heaps of information and feedback bringing us one step closer to our goal of establishing a year-round, indoor public market that will support local farmers and producers. There were many familiar faces and new ones, each of us bringing our creative ideas, experience, knowledge and energy. The Victoria Downtown Public Market Society is still accepting feedback so please let us know if you have anything to add.

Built in the late 1800s at a time when Victoria was enjoying rapid growth and prosperity, Market Square teemed with sailors and gold prospectors seeking adventure and fortune. The Square was home to bustling hotels, saloons, and shops that outfitted thousands of miners on their way to the Klondike gold fields. Market Square was a hub of lively and sometimes ribald activity, offering a bold contrast to Victoria’s image today as a “quaint bit of Old England”! Today much has changed, but every 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month Market Square plays host to the Victoria Winter Farmers’ Market and once again bustles with activity and entertainment (although perhaps more family-friendly than in the past)!

Aside from accessing great local products, attending a farmers’ market today is a step back to a time when our daily essentials came directly from local food producers and public markets were the social hubs of a community. Seasonal farmers’ markets provide consumers with access to fresh, local food and provide the best possible return to local food producers. A permanent downtown public market will go one step further by bringing residents and visitors together with local producers year-round, and thus increase food security and build social capital throughout Greater Victoria. Please support the Victoria Downtown Public Market Society, because Victoria is ready for a permanent downtown public market!

Going back to that old-world style of shopping where you know your butcher, your baker, the person who grows your vegetables and the chickens that lay your eggs is what the Victoria Downtown Public Market Society winter markets are all about. Handcrafted, homemade and small-batch products are superior, the craftsmanship and attention to detail make the results outstanding. Artisan food offers consumers to revel in foods that owe their extraordinary tastes to time-honoured, old-world techniques and traditions that give a personal connection to the maker. Our food artisan vendors source their ingredients from nearby farms or grow their own, making a concerted effort to only use what’s available, local and in season to create a high quality, fresh-tasting product. Connecting people with their food and their food purveyors is as much about nostalgia as it is about security and quality cuisine. If you haven’t had a chance to make it to our winter markets yet, you will not want to miss this one! Fresh and smoked salmon fillets, dried fruit, canned goods, chocolate, salt, eggs, meat, produce, pasta, perogies, bread, tortillas, salsa, cheese, donuts, and ice cream will all be available this Saturday in Market Square 11-3pm.

Farmers’ markets are community-gathering places where local producers sell their goods directly to the public, and where residents can enjoy the talents of local musicians, socialize with their neighbors and connect with and learn of the resources available within their community. Once you get to know our farmers’ market, shopping and cooking this winter season will be fun and simple. Don’t fret about what’s in season when. Just look for the best-looking produce and what catches your eye. If you don’t know how to cook it, ask the farmer, or the person next to you. It’s much more sociable than the supermarket!

The beauty of our farmers’ markets is the wonderful selection of really fresh vegetables and fruit. Not everything is available throughout the year, as one crop finishes another one starts, adding excitement to your biweekly shop. This means you get to cook with produce when it tastes the best. Drop by for produce, cheese, baked goods, preserves, eggs, salt, meat, pasta and all your other winter market favorites.

Tis the season: Join us at our winter markets to celebrate the spirit of giving

Bundle up the whole family this Saturday and come join us! This upcoming market we are pleased to have the Island Ukulele Players and Tuba Christmas providing us with a background of holiday cheer. Market Square will capture your winter excitement with its beautiful decorations and lights.

For the best experience, try to arrive right when the bell rings at 11am sharp and stay for lunch. Whet your palate with a slightly sinful sugar-covered doughnut and stay toasty with hot apple cider from B-Red Bakery. Make a quick stop at Fry’s Red Wheat Bread and pick up a fresh, warm loaf. Need an idea for dinner? Try Cowichan Bay pasta – fresh or frozen and made with all local ingredients. Tour the stands; sample, sample, sample. Save room and try the sandwich from El Guapo Chorizo Grill – arugula, roasted red pepper and paprika chorizo sausage; simple ingredients, outstanding taste. Start holiday shopping early. Many of our vendors have packaged or canned products that make wonderful Christmas gifts or holiday offerings.

The Victoria Downtown Public Market Society would like to thank former board member, volunteer and market manager Tim Trebilcock for his hard work and dedication to the VDPMS team and for helping us move a few steps closer to a permanent year-round farmers market in downtown Victoria. Although Tim was offered the opportunity to return as our market manager for this season, he’s chosen to seek out other challenges and we wish him the very best in his new endeavors!

On that note, we are thrilled to introduce our new winter market manager Corry Matechuck to our team! Corry is a local farmer. She has been running and operating Holland Farm for the past 10 years. Holland Farm is a small, natural-pesticide free farm, specializing in heirloom vegetables and unique edibles. Corry’s reputation is one of superior product, ethical farming practices and committed community involvement. Through perseverance and dedication, Corry has secured a strong local following and the support of many of Victoria’s finest restaurants

From 2006-2010, Corry was responsible for the onsite operations of the Bastion Square ICC Farmers Market. It was an exceptionally popular downtown market with an enthusiastic customer base. It provided access to sustainably produced local food while supporting the individuals growing and producing those products. This year, Corry was the Farm Market Manager for the Centennial Square Farm Market, which was part of the Sunday Market in the Square. We are so pleased to have Corry join our team. With her immense energy, upbeat attitude, loyalty to our local farmers/vendors and commitment to our winter market, we are sure that this winter is going to be exciting!
